What a science GPA is, and why it exists

Your science GPA is a second GPA built only from your science and math courses, separate from the overall GPA that pools everything you have taken. Medical and health-professional applications call it the BCPM GPA, after the four subject areas it draws from: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Math. Admissions committees compute it because your overall GPA can hide how you did in exactly the coursework their programs lean on — a 3.7 overall means something different when the science half sits at 3.9 versus 3.3. The science GPA formula

GPA = (sum of grade points × credits) ÷ (total credits)

The math is identical to any college GPA — it is a credit-weighted average — you simply restrict the courses to BCPM. Each letter maps to grade points: A/A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0. Worked example: a semester of BCPM courses

Suppose these five science and math courses make up your BCPM list. Convert each grade to points, multiply by credits, and total the quality points:

The quality points total 61.1 over 18 credits, so your science GPA is 61.1 ÷ 18 = 3.39. The 4-credit courses pull harder on the average than the 3-credit ones — that credit weighting is why an A in a 4-credit lab science moves your science GPA more than the same grade in a 3-credit class.

Why your verified science GPA can differ from your transcript

Here is the part that surprises the most students. The application services — AMCAS for MD programs and AACOMAS for DO programs — recalculate your GPA rather than copying your school’s. What counts as BCPM — and the honest caveats

As a rough guide, these fall under the science GPA:

  • Biology — general biology, and most life sciences such as genetics, microbiology, anatomy and physiology.
  • Chemistry — general and organic chemistry, plus biochemistry.
  • Physics — general and advanced physics courses.
  • Math — calculus, statistics and other mathematics courses.

But classification is not always obvious, and it is the application service, not your college, that decides. Psychology and sociology usually count toward the non-science GPA even though the MCAT tests them; some biology-adjacent or health-science courses can land in either bucket; and services occasionally reclassify a course from how your school labels it. So treat the list above as a starting point, not gospel — verify each course’s category against the current AMCAS or AACOMAS course-classification guidance (or the guidance for whichever service you are using) before you trust your number.

Why a strong science GPA matters

A healthy science GPA reassures a committee that you can handle a curriculum built almost entirely from science.
