The mistake almost everyone makes
Here is the single most common cumulative-GPA error: you cannot just average your semester GPAs. Averaging the term numbers quietly assumes every term carried the same credits, and they almost never do. A cumulative GPA pools every course from every term into one credit-weighted average — you add up all the quality points and divide by all the credits. Worked example: why averaging is wrong
Suppose you have three terms of different sizes. Each term’s quality points are its GPA times its credits:

The true cumulative GPA is 145.8 ÷ 45 = 3.24. But the naive average of the three term GPAs is (3.8 + 3.2 + 2.9) ÷ 3 = 3.30. The gap exists because your heavier, lower-scoring terms (15 and 18 credits) count for more than your light, high-scoring first term — and only credit-weighting captures that. Whenever your terms differ in size, pool the quality points.
The cumulative GPA formula
Cumulative GPA = (total quality points, all terms) ÷ (total credits, all terms)
where each course’s quality points are its grade points × its credits. To fold a single new term into an existing record, you do not need every old course — just your current GPA and the credits behind it:
New GPA = (current GPA × prior credits + new quality points) ÷ (prior credits + new credits)
Why a big record barely moves
As credits pile up, each new term is a smaller slice of the whole, so your GPA develops inertia. The same 3.6, 15-credit term lands very differently depending on how much is already behind you:

Early on, that strong term lifts you from 3.40 to 3.50. With 60 credits already banked, the identical term moves you only to 3.44 — the weight of the prior record absorbs it. This cuts both ways: a rough term also does less damage once you have credits behind you. It is why raising a GPA late is slow, and why planning early pays off.
Projecting a term with “Include current GPA”
You do not have to re-enter years of history to see where a term lands. Open Include current GPA, enter your current GPA and the credits you have earned, and add the new courses — the tool applies the fold-in formula above. Say you carry a 3.25 over 45 credits and plan this term:

The new term is 45.7 quality points over 13 credits, a 45.7 ÷ 13 = 3.52 term. Folding it in: your prior quality points are 3.25 × 45 = 146.25, so the projected cumulative is (146.25 + 45.7) ÷ (45 + 13) = 191.95 ÷ 58 = 3.31. A 3.52 term lifts your 3.25 to 3.31 — the realistic gain from one solid semester.
Overall vs. cumulative vs. major GPA
Overall GPA and cumulative GPA mean the same thing: your credit-weighted average across every graded course. Your major GPA is a narrower cut — only the courses that count toward your major — and it is often what honors programs, graduate schools and licensing boards actually check. How retakes move the cumulative number
A failed course usually enters as 0.0 grade points and pulls your cumulative GPA down until it is addressed. Whether a retake helps depends on your school: under grade replacement the old grade is dropped from the math and only the new one counts, which can lift a low GPA quickly; under grade averaging both attempts remain. Because a large record has so much inertia, replacing a couple of failing grades is often the single fastest lever you have. Confirm the policy — and any repeat limits — with your registrar.
