Your GPA (grade point average) is a single number that summarizes how you’ve done across all your courses. It’s what appears on your transcript and what graduate schools, scholarship committees and employers glance at first. The good news: the math is simple arithmetic once you know the two ingredients — a scale that turns letter grades into numbers, and a formula that averages those numbers, weighted by how much each course is worth. Step 1 — What a GPA actually is
A GPA is a weighted average. Each course you take produces a grade (a letter, like B+) and is worth a certain number of credit hours — how much time and weight the course carries, usually 3 or 4 for a full college class and 1 for a lab or seminar. To average grades that aren’t all worth the same, you weight each one by its credits. The result is a number, almost always between 0.0 and 4.0 on the standard US scale.
Step 2 — Convert letter grades to grade points
The first move is translating each letter grade into grade points on the 4.0 scale. This is the standard mapping used by most US colleges and high schools:

Note that A+ and A are both 4.0 on the standard scale — an A+ doesn’t push you above 4.0 (a few schools do award 4.3, so check yours). Step 3 — Apply the GPA formula
Here’s the whole thing in one line:
GPA = (sum of grade points × credits) ÷ (total credits)
The product of a course’s grade points and its credits is often called quality points. So the recipe is: find the quality points for each course, add them all up, then divide by the total credit hours.
Worked example — one semester
Suppose you took five courses this term:

Add the quality points: 16.0 + 9.9 + 11.1 + 9.0 + 2.3 = 48.3. Add the credits: 4 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 1 = 14. Divide:
48.3 ÷ 14 = 3.45
Your semester GPA is 3.45. Notice how the weak C+ did little damage — it was only a 1-credit lab — while the 4-credit A did the heavy lifting. That credit weighting is the single most important thing to understand about GPA.
Step 4 — Weighted vs. unweighted GPA
Everything above is an unweighted GPA: every course is capped at 4.0, no matter how hard it is. Many high schools also report a weighted GPA that gives extra credit for tougher courses. The common bonuses are:
- Honors: +0.5 grade points (an A in Honors is worth 4.5).
- AP or IB: +1.0 grade points on a 5.0 scale (an A in AP is worth 5.0).
You add the bonus to the grade points before multiplying by credits. Because of the bonuses, a weighted GPA can climb above 4.0.
Worked example — weighted

If each course is worth one credit, the weighted GPA is (5.0 + 3.8 + 4.0 + 3.7) ÷ 4 = 16.5 ÷ 4 = 4.13 — above 4.0, thanks to the AP and Honors bonuses. The same courses unweighted would be (4.0 + 3.3 + 4.0 + 3.7) ÷ 4 = 3.75. The high school GPA calculator lets you switch between the two.
Step 5 — Cumulative GPA across semesters
Your cumulative GPA pools every course you’ve ever taken into one calculation — it’s the number on your transcript. The key rule: you cannot simply average your semester GPAs unless every semester carried the same number of credits. Instead, add all the quality points and divide by all the credits.
Worked example — two terms
Say your first term was 48.3 quality points over 14 credits (the 3.45 above), and a second term earned 51.0 quality points over 15 credits (a 3.40 semester):
(48.3 + 51.0) ÷ (14 + 15) = 99.3 ÷ 29 = 3.42

Calculating GPA without credit hours
Sometimes you don’t have credit hours — a middle-school report card, or a quick estimate. In that case, treat every course as equally weighted and take the simple average of the grade points. Four courses at A, B+, A- and B is (4.0 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3.0) ÷ 4 = 14.0 ÷ 4 = 3.50. This is just the credit-weighted formula with every credit set to 1 — the weighting cancels out.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Averaging semester GPAs directly. That only works when every term has equal credits — otherwise pool the raw quality points and credits.
- Forgetting credit weighting. A grade in a 4-credit course moves your GPA far more than the same grade in a 1-credit course.
- Assuming A+ beats A. On the standard scale both are 4.0.
- Counting pass/fail or withdrawals. P/NP courses and W grades usually earn credit but carry no grade points, so they’re typically left out of the GPA. Check your registrar.
- Mixing scales. Don’t blend weighted and unweighted courses in one number unless you apply the bonuses consistently.
